A collection of new fonts, commissioned by Weekendavisen (The Weekend Newspaper), a Danish weekly broadsheet published every Friday, with a circulation of 50,000 copies and over 250,000 readers in Scandinavia. Weekendavisen is a continuation of the original Berlingske Tidende from 1749, one of the world’s oldest newspapers in print. The new font system comprises Hairline, Display, Text, and Sans typefaces. Our design is based on multiple sources, including the hand-drawn masthead by renowned Danish graphic designer and writer Erik Ellegaard Frederiksen, Henrik Kubel’s Display font designed for the paper in 2007, and the ‘father of Danish typeface design’ Knud Valdemar Engelhard’s distinctive street sign alphabet designed for Gentofte Council in 1923. The newspaper redesign was named World’s Best Designed in the 42nd best of Print News Design Competition 2021 by SND. The font system received the prestigious Tokyo Type Directors Club Award in 2021.
